# September 2022

After years of daily drinking, I recently quit booze forever. You can read my outer-inner-monologue about alcohol [here](/essays/1000-weekends). Confronting my demons forced me to consider [other things I don't like about myself](/essays/worst-you).

- [Randy, the Sequel](https://www.youtube.com/c/RandytheSequel): the logs of a man grappling with game-development and self-development. Almost 2 years ago, he suddenly left YouTube/Twitch; he abandoned a game he'd been working on for years. But this month, he popped back into existence with a brand new outlook on life... and a finished a game!

### Television series
- [The Rehearsal](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Rehearsal_(TV_series)): an uncomfortable masterpiece. HBO gave comedian(?) Nathan Fielder an insane budget to do insane things. In this short series, he constructs elaborate simulacra of situations so that he and others can "rehearse" real life for deeper insights. It's difficult to watch, but extremely worthwhile.

### Books
- [_The Good Earth_ by Pearl S. Buck](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Good_Earth): a heartbreaking rags-to-riches-to-rags story about wealth, family, work, fairness, kindness, and _land_. It's easy to see why a book about rural Chinese peasants was the best-selling book in the US during The Dust Bowl and The Great Depression. This book will inspire or haunt you.
- [_Solaris_ by Stanislaw Lem](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solaris_(novel)): a sci-fi book that gave me literal nightmares. It's unsettling and thought-provoking.
